Words DO matter. As behavioral health and substance use continue to increase and go unsupported in many populations, it’s more important than ever to think about the words that are used and the stigma they can carry.
In the fast-paced world of social media, video content continues to grow in popularity and we continue to see video functionality roll out across platforms. Recently, Facebook officially launched Facebook Stories, which are short, 20-second videos and photos that disappear after 24 hours. Although they’re gone in a flash, using tools like Stories in your organization’s social media may be a good way to get, and keep your audience’s attention; and many in our target audiences find them helpful.
It’s been a couple hundred years since Dr. Snow plotted cholera deaths on a simple map; one of the earliest examples of data visualization and epidemiology. But using maps, geo-spatial data and geographic information system data is trendier than ever. Think: satellites, drones, smart phones. These powerful technologies offer billions of pixels worth of data that many industries have only just tapped into as a resource.
Countries and development partners have made progress in strengthening data collection and deploying technologies to move data up the health system for monitoring and evaluating performance. But to realize the transformative power of information, it is the frontline healthcare workers—the doctors, nurses, community health workers, etc.—who require information to make informed, intelligent decisions.
We have a learning model at MEval-SIFSA where we’ve itemised what defines a health system as “functioning.” For us, a strong, functioning system is one that takes you through the entire data management process and evaluates how the data is gathered, interpreted and analysed. But most importantly, a functioning system uses data to maximise a health programme’s impact and improve health outcomes.
Over the years, we’ve learned a lot about managing production and handling the challenges of coordinating filming, editing, and posting videos across distances and time zones. But we always enjoy a new challenge, so we were excited when Facebook announced the public release of Facebook Live last Spring, which records videos and posts them to the site in real time. Needless to say, we’ve learned a lot from our first 20 Facebook Live videos. Here are the 6 P’s of what we’ve learned so far.
We work with clients and countries around the globe to deploy innovative user-centered logistics management information systems (LMIS) and other tools that help people make better decisions and take effective action. We have learned a lot from these experiences, such as: What makes a system implementation successful? Once data is available, how can it be used to make decisions and improve performance? What other HIS solutions and processes are linked to these digital LMIS? We will be sharing stories and lessons learned specifically from Zambia, Tanzania and Ethiopia through our Digital LMIS Innovations Blog Series.
I am passionate about the innovation that I represented at this forum, but it is very different to these innovations of “things”. Our proposal, partnering with Dimagi, is to replicate an approach JSI implemented and scaled with the Ministry of Health in Malawi and take those lessons to Kenya. While our approach does include innovative use of technology, a simple mHealth supply chain management tool for community health workers, this approach also includes IMPACT teams.
